Since the turn of the century humans have been building communities structured on technological and industrial practices that are steadily destroying the ecosystems that support life on this planet.

 “Retrotopia”** is an alternative vision that supports the re-emergence of sustainable community living focused on ecosystem regeneration and restoration.

Solutions for the social, economic, political and climate crises that we are currently facing are being developed in ecovillages and ecocities, regional caravans, ecosystem restoration camps and communities around the world. These initiatives aim to support small farmers, refugees, displaced persons and others by dealing with food production, water retention, land distribution, human conflicts and the elimination of colonialism and oppression.

Through photos and interview Liora Adler will share her 50 years of experience in simple living practices that demonstrate how we can glide into a transition back to “buen vivir” while continuing to do the urgently needed world work of community building and ecosystem restoration.

Liora is a visionary social actionist, educator, facilitator, mentor, event organizer and dancer. Raised during the ’60s social movements in the US, she came to understand that protest alone was inadequate for making substantive societal changes. Consequently, throughout the ’70s and ’80s she explored supportive community building that provided for both physical needs and the basic human need for belonging.

In 1982 Liora co-founded Huehuecoyotl, an ecovillage in central Mexico. In a local village she helped form a women’s sewing cooperative and a men’s campesino collaborative. 

In 1996, she set off with an intrepid team on what became a 13-year journey throughout Latin America where they shared knowledge about ecological systems and regenerative living and activated eco-social movements. 

From 1992-6 Liora served on the Board of Directors of the Global Ecovillage Network and as a GEN representative to the United Nations. 

She has organized courses, workshops, events and artistic activities for 100s of people, including farmers, indigenous peoples, and permaculture practitioners on 5 continents. She was the lead organizer for the 2003 “Call of the Condor,” a bioregional gathering of 800 people in Peru.

In 2004, Liora and her husband, Andrew Langford, became the co-founders and co-presidents of Gaia University, a project-based action un/learning university focused on Earth regeneration. 100s of Gaia U graduates and students are currently engaged in significant world work on 4 continents.

Through a grant from the LUSH company Andrew and Liora spent 5 years working on the regeneration of the almond industry in Ca, USA where 1000+ low water-use almond trees are thriving.  

Since 2019, Liora and her husband, returned to their home in Mexico where they have  been pioneering an alternative accreditation system – the International Coalition for the Accreditation of Ancient Future Skills – and are working on a regenerative agriculture project in Syria in which they have been training 100+ field and extension agents in permaculture, biointensive and syntropic techniques,

And if that were not enough, she and Andrew have now become the Knowledge Exchange Coordinators of the Ecosystem Restoration Camps Foundation which is supporting earth restoration in over 50 Camps globally! 

With so much on her plate, these days Liora dances to the tune of “older and bolder”!

**Retrotopia:  The title of two visionary books, by Zygmunt Baumann and by John Michael Greer whose focus is to understand how returning to the aspects of the past that best served humans will enable them to avoid the path of climate change and eco-destruction upon which we are currently embarked.
